La Chaire de recherche du Canada sur les arts et les littératures numériques et le Laboratoire NT2 (ALN|NT2), en collaboration avec l’Université de Bergen, lancent un appel à propositions artistiques pour une exposition en ligne intitulée exPhrasis (mai 2022).

exPhrasis, comme son titre le suggère, entend explorer le mouvement et l’espace tels qu’ils sont représentés, décrits, et exprimés à travers les mots, les images et les sons. L’exposition réunira trois oeuvres d’art web originales, intégrées à un environnement conçu en collaboration avec l’équipe curatoriale.

exPhrasis vise à interroger et à élargir nos conceptions du mouvement dans l’espace numérique en regroupant des œuvres expérimentant avec des modes et des méthodes uniques pour représenter la motion, le déplacement et l’espace. Ces œuvres dialogueront avec une interface graphique inspirée des fictions interactives et des jeux d’aventures textuels, façonnée et pensée en collaboration avec les artistes. Les internautes devront ainsi s’engager dans l’exposition et interagir avec les personnages non-joueurs (PNJ) pour obtenir de l’information ou entrer des commandes textuelles pour se mouvoir.

Les questions qui motivent et sous-tendent le projet sont les suivantes: 

Comment traduire le mouvement par l’entremise du texte de manière à ce qu’il puisse être perçu et ressenti ? De quelles façons le mouvement dans l’espace est-il évoqué et éprouvé ? De quelles façons les autres sens contribuent-ils à la perception et à la sensation du mouvement ? Est-ce que ces modalités d’expression creusent ou comblent le fossé entre les espaces numériques et physiques ou cette relation est déjà rendue fluide, poreuse et plus intuitive ?

exPhrasis sera lancée à la fin du mois de mai 2022 lors du Congrès international de la Electronic Literature Organization. L’exposition demeurera en ligne pour 6 mois, hébergée par le ALN|NT2 jusqu’à la fin août, suite à quoi elle sera présentée sur la plateforme The NEXT (mise sur pied par ELO) de la fin août à la fin de l’année 2022. 

Instructions: 

Nous invitons les artistes à soumettre des projets web qui touchent aux grands thèmes de l’exposition. Nous encourageons les projets d’artistes émergents ainsi que d’artistes provenant de la diversité culturelle, de groupes cherchant l’équité et de communautés sous-représentées. 

Les soumissions peuvent être envoyées en anglais ou en français.

Le courriel devra contenir les informations suivantes: 

• Nom, pseudonym et pronom de choix
• Titre de l’oeuvre 
• Description de l’oeuvre en cours (350 mots)
• Démarche artistique (150 mots)
• Lien vers un portfolio ou un site web (si applicable).

Les artistes sélectionnés devront nous faire parvenir un actif le 1er mai 2022. Le lien restera actif au cours des six mois d’exposition.

Processus de sélection: 

L’équipe de commissaire sélectionnera les projets en fonction de leur qualité et de leur résonance avec les thèmes de l’exposition. Les collaborateurs·rices recevront une réponse dans le mois suivant la date de soumission, à savoir le 1er mars 2022.

Les artistes recevront un cachet unique de 750$ CAD, en plus du support technique pour intégrer l'œuvre à l’exposition.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS

The Canada Research Chair in Digital Arts and Literature and the NT2 Laboratory (ALN|NT2), in association with the University of Bergen, is launching a call for artwork proposals for an upcoming online exhibition titled exPhrasis (May 2022).

exPhrasis, as its title suggests, is an exploration of movement and space rendered through words, image and sound. The exhibition will feature three original and web-based artworks from digital media artists, embedded and integrated in an environment designed in collaboration with the curatorial team.

exPhrasis will bring together artworks exploring different modes and methods available to convey and represent movement and space and aims to question and expand our conceptions of motion in digital space. The curatorial team seeks artists eager to engage in a collaborative process to determine their artwork's integration into the exhibition. Founded on the tradition of text-based adventure games or interactive fictions, exPhrasis requires active engagement from viewers who "interact" with different elements of the exhibition. To move through the exhibition, gain information from non-player characters (NPC), and to engage with the artworks, the viewer must enter textual commands as the space reveals itself through text.

Questions guiding the curatorial approach:

How does one translate movement through text or other mediums in such a way that it can be felt? To what effect? What are other ways in which movment throgh space is felt? How do other senses contribute to the sensation of movement? What are the implications for this now porous membrane between the digital exhibition space and the viewer's own physical environment? How exactly does the viewer's physical person bridge the gap between digital and physical spaces?

exPhrasis will be launched in late May 2022 at the Electronic Literature Organization's 2022 Conference. The exhibition will remain online for six months, hosted first by the NT2 Laboratory and the Canada Research Chair in Digital Arts and Literature (ALN | NT2) from late May to late August, then hosted by the Electronic Literature Organization's The NEXT from late Augsut until the end of the year.

Submission Guidelines

We invite submissions of artistic Web projects engaging, in a variety of forms, with the themes of the exhibition. We particularly encourage projects that come from cultural diversity, equity-seeking groups, and underrepresented communities. Emerging artists are encouraged to apply.

Proposals may be submitted in French or English.

To submit proposals, please send us an email to the address aln-nt2@uqam.ca with "CALL FOR PROPOSALS EXPHRASIS" in the subject line.

In the body of the email, please include the following:

• Name, pseudonym and pronoun of choice
• Title of work
• Descriptions of the work in progress (350 words maximum)
• Biographical note or artistic approach (150 words maximum)
• Links to portfolio website (if applicable)

Selected artists must deliver their work through an active link by May 1, 2022. The link must stay active until the end of the exhibition.

Selection Process

The curatorial team will select projects according to their quality and their relevance to the exhibition themes. Creators and collaborators will receive a response within one month of the submission deadline, March 1st, 2022.

Selected artists will receive a one-time artist fee of $750CAD, as well as technical support in integrating their artwork to the exhibition.
